Faith Healing

Faith Healing. A topic that makes me physically sick to think and hear about. People actually allow their children to suffer in pain (and even die) by “praying” for them to get better rather than taking them to a medical professional. It disgusts me. It just makes you wonder how parents can do that to their children. How can you idly sit by and let your child die in pain and agony?

I’m very thankful that I haven’t had a personal experience with faith healing. Because I wouldn’t allow it to happen.  And I beg each and every one of you to stop this from happening if you know of someone in your community who is killing their child like this.

FAITH HEALING IS CHILD ABUSE. You might as well take a gun and shoot your child in the head. It would be more humane than letting them die of, for example, bacterial pneumonia like two year old Kent Schaible. His parents, Herbert and Catherine Schaible of Philadelphia, chose not to take Kent to a doctor, relying instead on faith healing. “We tried to fight the devil, but, in the end, the devil won,” Herbert Schaible said at the time. A jury convicted the Schaibles of involuntary manslaughter in the January 2009 death of their 2-year-old son, Kent. The boy’s symptoms had included coughing, congestion, crankiness and a loss of appetite. His parents said he was eating and drinking until the last day, and they had thought he was getting better.

The Schaibles were sentenced to 10 years’ probation (They should have been charged for murder).

The parents said they would never again avoid medical attention for their other children. Unfortunately, on April 18 (2013), their 7-month-old son Brandon died after suffering severe diarrhea and breathing problems. The couple prayed over their son until he passed away.

It is truly sickening. These people deserve to rot in their hell. More realistically, they deserve to be put to death for allowing two innocent children to die in their care (or lack thereof).

Does faith healing work?

HELL NO.

There have been no scientific studies that affirm the efficacy of faith healing. In fact, medical research has found that faith healing has a dismal track record. A 1998 study from the journal Pediatrics found that of 172 children who died after their parents refused medical care, 140 of the deaths were from conditions for which survival rates with medical care would have exceeded 90 percent. The children’s deaths resulted from treatable diseases, such as pneumonia, meningitis and insulin-dependent diabetes. In one dramatic case, a 2-year-old girl choked to death on a banana while her parents and other adults prayed for her recovery. <—– WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!?!? Yeah, these religious bigots thought that they could pray away the choking. “Heimlich? Naaa fuck that.  That doesn’t work. I’ll just pray she stops choking.” (Not an actual quote).

Faith healing is subject to a number of state laws and exemptions, many of which shield parents from prosecution even when their child dies of an easily treated illness. This NEEDS to be changed. Faith healing needs to be considered child abuse and removed from our society. Faith healing is just more evidence that religious people are ignorant. Ignorant to modern medicine. And I would be fine with it, if it only affected these religious bigots. But it doesn’t just affect them. It affects their children. Most of the time it kills their children. The last time I check, letting your children die was illegal. Now all of a sudden when you say it was faith healing it’s not even child abuse? It’s just endangering the welfare of a child? What the fuck is wrong with you!? Children die from their parents’ ignorant faith healing and they don’t even get charged with murder? Now I am all for the First Amendment and Freedom of Religion, but your right to Freedom of Religion (practicing faith healing) violates your children’s right to life (, liberty, etc.)! What you must understand is that your rights stop dead in their tracks where the rights of another begin. Your right to practice faith healing stops when it threatens your child’s right to live.

There just isn’t much as a precedent for this kind of case. I read an article about a case in Wisconsin that went to the Supreme Court. It’s a year old article (from 2012, which you can read here), about a faith healing case from 2008 where 11-year-old Madeline “Kara” Neumann died after her parents prayed for her recovery but did not take her to see a doctor. Before her death, Kara’s father saw that she looked dehydrated and so he recommended using Pedialyte. However, her mother said that would “take glory from God.” The autopsy found that Kara had a treatable form of diabetes.

It is sad that this poor girl died from something treatable. Judge Vincent Howard of Marathon County Circuit Court said that “The free exercise clause of the First Amendment protects religious belief but not necessarily conduct.” And I couldn’t agree more. It relates back to my earlier point that your right to practice this insane and idiotic belief does not give you the right to allow someone (your own child!) to die a horrible and painful death. First Amendment privileges do not excuse the harming of another person.

It just makes me sick to think about this. And it happens every day all over the world. Hopefully one day the Supreme Court will rule that faith healing should be illegal. Which it should be. Anything that causes the death of innocent children should be illegal. Right? Of course.

Now that you’ve read mine, tell me what your thoughts are on this issue.

Random Rant: Topic: Ignorance

One argument that I always here from stupid religious bigots is the one that all atheists are ignorant. That we are closed minded. I always find my self laughing out loud at this weak argument whenever it is presented to me.

The opposite is in fact the truth. Atheists are actually the most opened mined people on the planet. The fact that we reject god is proof that we are open minded. The only way to see the truth (That god doesn’t exist) is to be open minded. If in fact we were close minded as these religies often say, we would be as submissive and obedient as they are to their false god.

And just because we reject your god doesn’t make us ignorant. You dumb ass religies (Creationists specifically) rejecting irrefutable evidence for evolution is ignorant. THAT is close mindedness. Belief in god is just proof of close mindedness and ignorance. I believe this quote sums up my point quite nicely:

“What is God? I think, believers, that God s the opinions that you can’t otherwise justify. God is your intellectual laziness. God is your ego. God is that which you need God to be. God is X. God is the sum of all your willful ignorance. God is a convenience. God is a social adhesive. God is your bigotry. God is an excuse. God is your clever ploy to avoid thinking, responsibility, and the need to develop a sense of social justice. God is your lie. What is God? God isn’t real.” -TJ Kincaid

This was one of the first atheist quote I ever read and really understood. For an open minded person (AKA an atheist), as you are reading it, you can’t help but nod your head in agreement at everything TJ Kincaid is saying. God really is just an excuse. An excuse to do evil in his name. An excuse to pray for your kids to get better instead of taking them to a doctor (I have a post about this coming very soon). God is an excuse to not think for oneself.

I have a question for you religies. If god gave you free will (Which you all claim he does), why does he want you to be obedience and unquestioning? Part of freewill is the ability to question things. Free will is defined as “free and independent choice; voluntary decision”. But your god tells you that this is wrong. Yet he (according to you religies) gives you this ability to think for oneself anyways.

So the next time you (believers) call an atheist ignorant (or close minded), just remember that you are actually the ignorant close minded one. Not us. You. The believer. The Creationist. The idiotic, obedient, unintelligent bigot who isn’t allowed to think for yourself.

Atheists are opened minded, intelligent, freethinkers, and most certainly NOT ignorant.

Rant over.

I’ll be posting something on the dumb fuck religious bastards who let their kids die because they “pray” for them to get better rather than taking them to a doctor. This is an issue that really pisses me off. I’ll have it posted by Saturday.

Until then,

Secular Student Alliance

The mission of the Secular Student Alliance is to organize, unite, educate, and serve students and student communities that promote the ideals of scientific and critical inquiry, democracy, secularism, and human-based ethics. They envision a future in which nontheistic students are respected voices in public discourse and vital partners in the secular movement’s charge against irrationality and dogma.

The Secular Student Alliance is a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit. They work to organize and empower nonreligious students around the country. Their primary goal is to foster successful grassroots campus groups which provide a welcoming community for secular students to discuss their views and promote their secular values.

They support their affiliates in a variety of ways, including supplying literature and outreach supplies, group-running guides, hands-on assistance, discounted access to prominent speakers, and monetary project grants.

For individual students, they cooperate with other national nontheistic organizations to get discounted students rates for large events and provide travel grants to help the students attend. They hold regional summits and a national conference each year to give students leadership training and the opportunity to network and problem-solve with their peers.

The Secular Student Alliance devotes the majority of its resources to supporting its affiliate groups. They only offer this support to groups that further our mission. They have developed a set of standards to help campus groups determine if they should seek affiliation with them.

The SSA is an amazing group. I hope all atheist/agnostic students will join! Check out their website to see if there is a chapter group near you! And if they isn’t, you can start one!

An SSA member ship is free for students (Although donations are much appreciated) and they’ll even send you a membership card for free!

The SSA Annual Conference is coming up in just a few months! With 2 locations (Las Vegas, Nevada and Columbus, Ohio)! I am attending for the first time this year in Columbus and I am very excited!

Check out their website for full details! There’s tons of cool stuff for you to see!
